Wangyal Gurung was born in 2002 in the village of Phylak, on the border between Upper and Lower Mustang in a large family. He is the only child that his parents decided to send to school. After a few years of study at the Shree Tibetan Medicine Center and School in Jharkot in the spring of 2018, he began a six-year course of Tibetan sacral painting at the Senchen Baudha monastery in Kathmandu.
The annual cost of his education (tuition, boarding, board) is 1376 dollars (103200 Nepalese rupees), 115 dollars a month.
